continued with the vice president and joe manchin, the plan on the right, they are accompanying senator mark kirk, a year after he suffered a stroke that paralyzed him after arduous -- i hope i said mark kirk -- after a year of arduous rehabilitation, senator kirk is returning to work and has decided he wants to climb those stairs himself. he had to re-learn to walk, and he said his ultimate inspiration was this climb. obviously a lot of photo ops along the way. so many of the staffers and others senators have shown their support, as he makes this very dramatic assent on his first day back to work. obviously there as well to see some of the swearing in of his new senators, the colleagues who will join him for the chambers. this is a great moment, a nice moment of bipartisanship. great to see the vip alongside him. congratulations to mark kirk. there he goes. >>> lest you think that this is something he didn't think he could handle. he can handle it. these are 45 steps at the state capitol, but he already had some trial runs elsewhere. he climbed 37 floors, the staircases in the chicago willi

, i won't ask you relating to republicans but to some democrats, joe manchin's comments regarding the president said i'm disappointed the president did not recommend the creation of a national commission on mass violence as i proposed. max bacchus said we need a law in montana instead of one size fits all directive of washington. not the fringe republicans, not behind the nra ad, but still, similar talking points from them that would fall with some of the things we have heard out of the nra, chris. does your party or some within your party need -- since rick perry said it's about prayer, do they need a come to jesus moment, as well? >> here's the challenge. when you're a red state democrat, you know, you have a very different perspective. >> but everything changed after newtown. how many times have we heard that? >> absolutely, absolutely. and i think the question is, you know, i won't -- i can't speak for senator manchin or the other senate democrats but i think they want a more obviously comprehensive approach. what i would say to them is that's fine. and that's a good thing. bu

's second-term agenda? >> it's a big challenge. take an issue like gun control. like joe manchin, he said he's opposed to the assault weapons ban and everything obama is doing on gun control. the president wants to get through immigration, gun control. he wants to raise taxes probably again. and the challenge on those issues is, those democrats are, the president doesn't have to run for reelection. but they're worried he'll drag their numbers down. >> what about the people going through the 2014 congressional elections, do they look to the president as being someone who will help them fund-raise? do they rely on him for that or do they move past because he's getting into that lame duck status? >> it totally depends on the member and what kind of house district they represent or the state. except for some extreme cases, democrats representing really red states or obviously republicans, usually when offered the help from the president, they say, yes. the money you get from it is really so good. it's the best find of fund-raiser you can have if you're in a tough race. we'll see if he's popular
